History

The WKV Group was formed through the creation and amalgamation of several companies many years ago. The acronym “WKV” stands for “Wimalasurendra, Kehelgamu Oya, Viduliya”, and seeks to pay tribute to Sri Lanka’s “Father of Hydropower”, the visionary, D.J. Wimalasurendra. It depicts the history of Mr Wimalasurendra’s proposal, in 1918, to combine the water potential of Maskeli Oya (the Maskeli River) and Kehelgamu Oya (the “Kehelgamu River”) and to divert them to produce 114.5 MW of viduliya (ie “electricity” in Sinhalese). In 1950, Mr Wimalasurendra successfully completed the Laxapana Hydro Power Scheme, paving way for many hydropower schemes that eventually made Sri Lanka self-sufficient in electricity while strengthening the economy.

We are an establishment that cares for our people, our communities and our planet while pursuing our business goals, and we believe in the pursuing the benefit of our shareholders as well as all our stakeholders contemporaneously. Our unwavering focus on performance and to minimize our carbon footprint has enhanced our ability to transmit over 121 GWh of electricity to the Ceylon Electricity Board annually. This is equivalent to reducing more than 30,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually while also enabling us to be more cost effective.

The WKV Group is dedicated to optimally use the abundant renewable energy sources to create environmentally sustainable electricity and to increase the overall contribution of renewable energy to Sri Lanka’s total energy output capacity. We firmly believe in the immense potential of the renewable energy sector and are intent on playing our part towards a greener today for a better tomorrow.
